During a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle, many experience common symptoms such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), fatigue, and mood fluctuations. However, one symptom often overlooked is the headache and/or migraines during menstruation period. Known as a menstrual headache in TCM, this type of headache can occur at various stages of the menstrual cycle — before, during, or after the period cycle.
What Are Menstrual Headaches/Menstrual Migraines?
Menstrual headaches/migraines are distinct from regular headaches in both their intensity and accompanying symptoms. These headaches typically occur around the time of menstruation and can be sharp or throbbing in nature. They often affect the sides of the head (temporal region), forehead, or the back of the head. Temporal headaches (pain on the sides of the head) are particularly common and can be debilitating. Unlike regular headaches, menstrual headaches are frequently accompanied by other menstrual symptoms such as fatigue, emotional fluctuations, and in severe cases, nausea or dizziness. These combined symptoms can significantly impact daily activities and work.
TCM Perspective on Menstrual Headaches/Menstrual Migraines
In TCM, menstrual headaches are believed to be caused by an imbalance in Qi (energy) and Blood, as well as insufficient Yin essence. During menstruation, the body experiences a natural depletion of Qi and blood, which can further aggravate this imbalance. As a result, the head’s “clear sensory pathways” (the sensory areas responsible for vision, hearing, and mental clarity) become undernourished, leading to pain. According to TCM, when these areas are not properly nourished, they will cause discomfort — hence the saying, “If it is not nourished, it will pain”.
To treat menstrual headaches, TCM emphasizes restoring balance to the Qi and blood, ensuring their smooth flow, and nourishing the head’s sensory pathways. When this balance is achieved, headache symptoms can be alleviated naturally.
Effective TCM Treatments to Relieve Menstrual Headaches/Menstrual Migraines
Treatment for menstrual headaches/menstrual migraines in TCM goes beyond just herbal remedies. Acupuncture is also an effective therapy that addresses the root cause of the headache. By stimulating specific acupoints, acupuncture helps open the meridians, balance Qi and blood, and alleviate pain.
In addition to professional treatments, I would like to recommend a few self-care techniques that can be helpful for women experiencing menstrual headaches. Loosening tight hair ties, gently massaging the temples and scalp, and practicing relaxation techniques can all help relieve headache symptoms.
It’s also crucial to maintain good overall health during the menstrual cycle. Prioritise adequate sleep and engage in moderate exercise, both of which promote Qi and blood circulation and improve the body’s immunity. By combining these approaches — acupuncture, self-care, and lifestyle adjustments — women can better manage menstrual headaches and improve their quality of life during their cycle.
Common But Overlooked Aspect
Menstrual headaches/migraines are a common but often overlooked symptom of the menstrual cycle. Understanding their causes, particularly from a TCM perspective, can help women address and alleviate these symptoms more effectively. By balancing Qi and Blood, nourishing the head’s sensory pathways, and incorporating necessary treatments, self-care, and lifestyle changes, women can take control of their menstrual health and reduce the impact of headaches on their daily lives.
